Forced water landing due to loss of power, Florida Bay, near Bahia Key, FL, seriously injuring the pilot.

On March 11, 2023, about 1329 eastern standard time, an amateur-built, experimental Velocity SE RG, N343BD, was substantially damaged during a ditching in Florida Bay, near Bahia Key, Florida. The pilot was seriously injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.
The airplane was enroute from The Florida Keys Marathon International Airport (MTH), Marathon, Florida, to the pilot’s home airport, Summerland Key Cover Airport (FD51), Summerland Key, Florida. Due to his injuries, the pilot was unable to provide a complete statement as of the publication of this report. He stated to first responders that during cruise flight, the airplane experienced a total loss of engine power, and he ditched the airplane in Florida Bay.
The wreckage was recovered and retained for further examination.
