Gear Up

The pilot of a sleek, silver home-built kit airplane that experienced landing gear failure Sunday was identified by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Taras Rud, 37, from Vero Beach landed the 2010 Velocity aircraft on its belly at the Key West International Airport when its landing gear failed to lower, Monroe County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Deputy Becky Herrin said Monday.

Neither Rud nor his passengers — Annette Rene-Danigelis of Muskegon, Michigan; Olena Mikhnyk of Vero Beach and her three-year-old daughter — were injured, Herrin said.
